Coco Diethanolamide (Coco DEA)

INCI Name: Cocamide DEA / Coco Diethanolamide.
Chemical Type: Non-ionic surfactant
Function: Foam booster, foam stabilizer, viscosity enhancer and co-surfactant.
Appearance: Clear to pale yellow, viscous liquid or semi-solid material, depending on grade and temperature.

Coco Diethanolamide, commonly known as Coco DEA, is a non-ionic surfactant and foam-enhancing ingredient derived from coconut fatty acids. It is widely used in cleansing and personal care formulations to improve foam generation, foam stability, viscosity and the overall sensory properties of the finished product.

Coco DEA is particularly useful in surfactant-based formulations where additional foam, body and viscosity are desired. It can be incorporated into shampoos, body washes, liquid cleansers, hand washes and other rinse-off products.

Key Benefits

  • Enhances and stabilizes foam

  • Helps produce rich and creamy lather

  • Improves formulation viscosity

  • Helps provide better body and consistency to cleansing products

  • Can improve the overall sensory feel of surfactant formulations

  • Helps support stable cleansing formulations

  • Compatible with many commonly used anionic and non-ionic surfactants

  • Suitable for a variety of rinse-off personal care applications

Common Applications

Coco DEA can be used in:

  • Shampoos

  • Body washes

  • Shower gels

  • Liquid hand washes

  • Facial cleansers

  • Liquid soaps

  • Bubble baths

  • Household liquid cleaners

  • Other surfactant-based cleansing formulations

Recommended Usage

Typical usage levels may vary depending on the formulation and the specification of the raw material.

Shampoo: 1–5%
Body Wash / Shower Gel: 1–5%
Liquid Hand Wash: 1–5%
Cleansers: 0.5–3%

The optimum level depends on the desired viscosity, foam characteristics, surfactant system and final product requirements. Formulators should always determine the appropriate concentration through formulation and stability testing.

Solubility

Dispersible or soluble in water depending on grade and formulation conditions. Compatible with many surfactant systems.

How to Use

Coco DEA can generally be incorporated into the surfactant phase of the formulation.

  1. Add Coco DEA slowly to the surfactant blend.

  2. Mix gently until completely and uniformly incorporated.

  3. Avoid excessive agitation to minimize unnecessary foam formation during processing.

  4. If required, gentle warming can be used to facilitate incorporation, according to the raw material supplier's recommended processing conditions.

  5. Add the remaining ingredients according to the formulation procedure.

  6. Adjust the final viscosity and pH of the finished product as required.

  7. Allow the formulation to deaerate before final filling.

Storage Instructions

  • Store in a cool, dry and well-ventilated area.

  • Keep the container tightly closed when not in use.

  • Protect from direct sunlight, moisture and excessive heat.

  • Store in the manufacturer's recommended temperature range.

  • Avoid prolonged exposure to extreme temperatures.

  • If the material thickens or solidifies due to low temperature, gently bring it back to the recommended processing temperature before use, if permitted by the supplier's specifications.

  • Use clean and dry equipment when handling the material to avoid contamination.

Formulation Note

Coco DEA is primarily used as a foam booster and viscosity-enhancing co-surfactant. It is often combined with anionic surfactants to improve lather and product consistency. The final dosage should be optimized according to the complete surfactant system and desired product characteristics.

The finished formulation should be evaluated for pH, viscosity, appearance, microbial stability, preservative efficacy and long-term stability before commercial production.
