Product Description:

Fractionated Coconut Oil is a processed form of coconut oil (Cocos nucifera) in which the longer chain fatty acids are separated out, leaving behind a lighter oil composed mainly of medium chain fatty acids. Unlike regular coconut oil, which solidifies in cooler temperatures, Fractionated Coconut Oil remains liquid at all temperatures, making it easier to measure, pour, and blend. The oil is colourless to pale yellow with no coconut scent, a very light texture, and fast absorption into the skin. Because of its neutral character and stability, it has become one of the most widely used carrier oils for diluting essential oils. At Maduras Herbals, we supply Fractionated Coconut Oil as a raw material for cosmetic manufacturers, DIY formulators, aromatherapists, and skin care product developers looking for a stable, odourless carrier oil.

About Fractionated Coconut Oil (MCT)

Fractionated coconut oil and medium-chain triglycerides (MCT) are terms that are often used interchangeably in the cosmetic industry, though they are not always exactly the same thing. Fractionated coconut oil is made by removing the long-chain fatty acids from regular coconut oil, leaving behind only the medium-chain fatty acids, mainly caprylic and capric acids, in the form of triglycerides. MCT, on the other hand, is a triglyceride containing medium-chain fatty acids that can be produced either by this fractionation process or by hydrolysing oils into isolated fatty acids and glycerine, which are then re-esterified to form the final triglycerides. The origin and processing of each can differ, which is why they are related but not always identical materials.

What both share is what makes them so useful in formulation. They are fast-absorbing, lightweight emollients that leave a soft and non-greasy feel on the skin, and they are frequently used as silicone alternatives in natural cosmetic products. Unlike regular coconut oil, they do not solidify in cold weather, which makes them much easier to work with across different climates and product types. They also have excellent oxidation resistance, no characteristic coconut scent, and an ability to enhance the spreadability of creams and lotions, solubilise lipophilic ingredients, and form a light semi-occlusive film on the skin that helps reduce water loss. They are suitable for all skin types, including oily skin, due to their light and fluid texture.

Working with Fractionated Coconut Oil in Your Formulations

Fractionated coconut oil and MCT can be added to emulsions, makeup, oil-based formulations, and haircare products. They work well as a substitute for regular coconut oil in formulations where a product that stays liquid in cold weather is needed, or where the coconut scent is not desirable. They can even be used as carriers for oil-soluble fragrances. Because they are very heat stable, they can be processed in either the cold or hot phase of a formulation without any concerns about degradation.

Quality & Formulation Notes

One specific packaging note worth being aware of: formulations containing fractionated coconut oil or MCT should not be packed in containers that contain polystyrene in their composition. These oils can interact with polystyrene and cause the plastic to become brittle upon contact, which is a practical concern for container selection during product development.

Applications

Aromatherapy and Massage: Carrier base for essential oil dilution, massage oil blends, aromatherapy formulations

Skin Care Formulations: Facial oils, body lotions, lightweight moisturisers, makeup remover blends

Hair Care Formulations: Lightweight hair oils, leave-in conditioning sprays, scalp serums

General Use: Bulk supply for cosmetic manufacturers, DIY skin and hair care kits, salon and spa product formulations

Packing and Storage

Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat. Keep the container tightly sealed when not in active use. The oil remains liquid even when stored at lower temperatures. Best before 24 months from packaging date due to its high oxidative stability.

Caution

Patch test is recommended before use on skin. In case of any allergic reaction, discontinue use and consult a dermatologist or physician.
