Product Description :
Hydroxyethyl Cellulose (HEC) is a non-ionic, water-soluble cellulose derivative widely used as a thickening, rheology-modifying and stabilising agent in cosmetic, personal care and household cleaning formulations. It is produced by chemically modifying cellulose, a naturally occurring polymer found in plant cell walls, with hydroxyethyl groups to improve its water solubility and functional properties.
Hydroxyethyl Cellulose is valued for its ability to increase viscosity, improve product texture and help maintain a uniform consistency. It can form smooth, clear to slightly hazy gels depending on the grade, concentration, formulation composition and processing conditions. Its non-ionic nature makes it compatible with a broad range of cosmetic ingredients, including many surfactants, humectants and conditioning agents.
In personal care formulations, Hydroxyethyl Cellulose is commonly used in shampoos, face washes, body washes, liquid cleansers, lotions and gels. It helps create the desired viscosity, improves application properties and contributes to a smooth, consistent product texture.
Key Benefits
1. Effective Thickening
Hydroxyethyl Cellulose increases the viscosity of water-based formulations, helping achieve a thicker and more controlled consistency. It is suitable for products ranging from lightweight liquids to viscous gels, depending on the grade and concentration used.
2. Improved Product Texture
It provides a smooth, uniform texture and can improve the flow and application characteristics of personal care products.
3. Stabilising Properties
Hydroxyethyl Cellulose can help suspend dispersed particles and improve the physical stability of suitable formulations. However, it does not replace a suitable emulsifier or guarantee long-term stability.
4. Non-Ionic Compatibility
As a non-ionic polymer, HEC is compatible with many ingredients across a range of formulation conditions. Its compatibility should still be verified when used with high electrolyte levels, concentrated surfactants or specialised active ingredients.
5. Film-Forming Properties
It can form a thin film on surfaces, contributing to the feel and performance of certain skin and hair care products.
6. Versatile Formulation Applications
Its thickening and rheology-modifying properties make it useful in a wide variety of rinse-off, leave-on and household cleaning formulations.

Formulation Guidelines
Hydroxyethyl Cellulose is generally supplied as a free-flowing powder. It must be properly hydrated in water to develop its thickening properties.
A typical starting concentration in personal care formulations is approximately 0.2–2.0%, although the appropriate level depends on the polymer grade, desired viscosity and overall formulation.
To minimise lump formation, disperse the powder gradually into the water phase with adequate agitation. Some grades can be pre-dispersed in a compatible non-solvent liquid, such as glycerin, before adding them to water. Follow the supplier's recommended hydration procedure, as processing requirements vary between grades.
Allow sufficient time for complete hydration before evaluating the final viscosity. Avoid adding the entire powder quantity too quickly, as this can cause lumps with dry interiors that hydrate slowly.
Solubility
Hydroxyethyl Cellulose is soluble in water and forms viscous aqueous solutions after hydration. It is generally insoluble in most organic solvents. Solubility and hydration behaviour depend on the grade and processing conditions.
Appearance
Typically supplied as a white to off-white powder. Aqueous solutions may range from clear to slightly hazy, depending on the grade and formulation.
Storage
Store in a tightly closed container in a cool, dry place, protected from moisture and direct sunlight. Keep the powder dry and prevent contamination during handling.
Important Note
Hydroxyethyl Cellulose is derived from cellulose, but commercial grades are chemically modified polymers. Its suitability for natural or naturally derived product claims depends on the grade, manufacturing process and applicable certification requirements. The recommended usage level, viscosity grade and hydration procedure should always be confirmed using the supplier's technical data sheet.
