CMEA (Coconut Monoethanolamide) is a nonionic surfactant derived from coconut fatty acids and monoethanolamine. It is widely used in personal care and home-care formulations as a foam booster, viscosity enhancer, stabilizer, and emollient.

CMEA helps improve the richness, density, and stability of foam while contributing to a smooth and creamy texture. It is particularly useful in cleansing formulations where enhanced viscosity and luxurious foam are desired.

It can be incorporated into shampoos, body washes, liquid hand washes, facial cleansers, shower gels, bubble baths, and other surfactant-based formulations.

Key Benefits

  • Foam booster: Enhances foam volume and produces a richer, creamier lather.
  • Viscosity enhancer: Helps increase the thickness of liquid cleansing formulations.
  • Foam stabilizer: Improves foam stability and helps maintain lather during use.
  • Texture enhancer: Gives formulations a smoother and more substantial feel.
  • Cleansing support: Works alongside primary surfactants to improve the overall cleansing system.
  • Formulation flexibility: Compatible with many commonly used anionic, amphoteric, and nonionic surfactants.
  • Coconut-derived: Manufactured from coconut fatty-acid-derived raw materials.

Applications

CMEA can be used in:

  • Shampoo
  • Body wash
  • Shower gel
  • Liquid hand wash
  • Facial cleanser
  • Bubble bath
  • Liquid soap
  • Household liquid cleansers
  • Other surfactant-based cleansing products

Typical Usage

Recommended usage level: 1–5%, depending on the formulation and desired viscosity and foam characteristics.

For a new formulation, it is advisable to start at a lower concentration and adjust according to the required viscosity, foam profile, clarity, and skin feel.

How to Use

CMEA is generally added to the surfactant phase of the formulation. Since it can be relatively viscous or waxy depending on its grade and temperature, it require gentle heating to facilitate incorporation.

Add it gradually with continuous stirring until completely dispersed or dissolved. Avoid excessive agitation, which can introduce unnecessary air into the formulation.

When combining CMEA with other surfactants, the final viscosity should be adjusted only after all major ingredients have been incorporated, as surfactant interactions can significantly affect the final viscosity.

Storage

Store CMEA in a cool, dry and well-ventilated place, away from direct sunlight and excessive heat.

  • Keep the container tightly closed when not in use.
  • Protect from moisture.
  • Avoid prolonged exposure to high temperatures.
  • If the material becomes solid or excessively viscous due to low temperature, gentle warming can help restore its workable consistency.
  • Avoid overheating.
