About Neem Oil

Neem oil is cold-pressed from the seeds of Azadirachta indica, an evergreen tree native to the Indian subcontinent and now grown across tropical Africa and Asia as well. At room temperature it sits as a semi-solid, yellowish-brown to dark brown oil, a texture shaped by its relatively high palmitic and stearic acid content. Its most recognisable trait is a strong, pungent aroma with garlic-like, sulphurous notes, which is worth flagging to formulators since it can carry through into a finished product.

Neem has centuries of use in traditional Indian herbal medicine, most famously as a home remedy for head lice. Beyond that folk use, laboratory and in-vivo research on neem oil points to genuine anti-inflammatory, skin-repairing, and antimicrobial activity, including documented action against Staphylococcus aureus, which is a large part of why it shows up so often in formulations aimed at acne-prone and irritated skin.

Working with Neem Oil in Your Formulations

Neem oil performs well in lipsticks, balms, bath melts, shampoos, hair conditioners, and hair balms, typically used at lower percentages where its conditioning and antimicrobial properties matter most rather than as a primary base oil.

Quality & Formulation Notes

The biggest thing to plan around with neem oil is its scent, as it is frequently described as unpleasant on its own and can leave a strong note in a finished product, so fragrance masking or lower usage rates are worth factoring in early. It can also leave some discolouration in lighter coloured products. Rare cases of contact dermatitis have been reported, so a patch test recommendation is worth keeping on the product page. Its melting point of between 25 and 30°C means it will be semi-solid in cooler conditions, so gentle warming before use may be needed depending on the season and storage environment.

Applications

Hair Care Formulations: Hair oils, scalp oil blends, traditional hair care formulations

Skin Care Formulations: Body oils and balms in blended formulations, used in small percentages alongside lighter oils

Cosmetic and Soap Making: Soap making, cosmetic and personal care manufacturing, carrier base for blended formulations

General Use: Bulk supply for cosmetic manufacturers, traditional and Ayurvedic product formulation, agricultural and horticultural applications

Packing and Storage

Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat. Keep the container tightly sealed when not in active use. The oil may thicken or solidify slightly at lower temperatures and can be gently warmed to restore its liquid consistency. Best before 24 months from packaging date. Natural variation in colour, thickness, and scent between batches is characteristic of a cold pressed, unrefined oil.

Caution

For external use only. Neem Oil should never be ingested and is not intended for internal use under any circumstances. Keep out of reach of children. Patch test is recommended before use on skin. In case of any allergic reaction or irritation, discontinue use and consult a dermatologist or physician.
