Product Description:

INCI Name: Glyceryl Stearate
Common Name: Glyceryl Monostearate (GMS)
CAS Number: 31566-31-1 (commonly listed for Glyceryl Stearate)
Category: Emulsifier, Emollient and Consistency-Enhancing Agent
Origin: Generally derived from glycerine and stearic acid; available in vegetable-derived and other grades.

Glyceryl Monostearate (GMS) is a widely used cosmetic ingredient that helps improve the texture, stability and consistency of oil-in-water and other suitable emulsion systems. It is typically supplied as white to off-white waxy flakes, beads or a solid material.

GMS is produced by esterifying glycerine with stearic acid. Depending on its grade and composition, it functions as an emulsifier, co-emulsifier, emollient and consistency-enhancing agent. It helps create smooth, uniform creams and lotions while contributing a soft, conditioned skin feel.

GMS is widely used in skincare, body care, hair care and other personal-care formulations where improved texture and emulsion performance are desired.

Key Benefits and Functions

Emulsion Support: Helps stabilise suitable emulsion systems and supports uniform distribution of oil and water phases.

Texture Enhancement: Contributes body and structure to creams, lotions and other emulsified products.

Emollient Properties: Helps soften the skin and improve the sensory feel of a formulation.

Consistency Modification: Increases the richness and thickness of suitable emulsions, depending on the overall formula and processing conditions.

Formulation Compatibility: Can be used alongside other emulsifiers, fatty alcohols and stabilising ingredients to achieve the desired texture and performance.

Applications

GMS is commonly used in:

  • Face creams and moisturisers

  • Body lotions and body creams

  • Hand and foot creams

  • Sunscreen formulations, subject to appropriate product testing

  • Hair conditioners and conditioning creams

  • Cream cleansers

  • Body butters and other emulsified personal-care products

Recommended Usage

Typical starting ranges depend on the grade and the formulation:

  • Creams and lotions: 2–5%

  • Rich creams and body butters: 3–10%

  • Co-emulsifier applications: As required by the primary emulsifier system

These ranges are indicative formulation guidelines, not universal specifications. The optimum level depends on the exact GMS grade, oil phase, emulsifier system and desired product consistency.

Solubility and Processing

GMS is practically insoluble in water but disperses and melts in the heated oil phase. It is generally incorporated into the oil phase and heated until fully melted before emulsification.

The required processing temperature should follow the supplier's specification and be compatible with the other ingredients in the formulation. Adequate mixing and controlled cooling help achieve a uniform product.

Compatibility

GMS is commonly used with emulsifying waxes, fatty alcohols such as cetyl alcohol and cetearyl alcohol, stearic acid, and suitable oils and emollients.

It may function as a co-emulsifier rather than a complete emulsifier in many formulations. Standard GMS should not automatically be treated as equivalent to self-emulsifying GMS or a commercial emulsifying wax. The grade and composition must be confirmed before formulation.

Storage and Handling

Store in a tightly sealed container in a cool, dry place, protected from direct sunlight, moisture and contamination. Follow the supplier's recommended storage conditions and shelf life.

Formulation Note

GMS can contribute to viscosity and emulsion structure, but it does not guarantee emulsion stability on its own. Finished formulations should be evaluated for viscosity, pH where relevant, centrifuge stability, temperature cycling and long-term physical stability.
