Product Description:

Pomegranate Seed Oil is a cold pressed carrier oil extracted from the seeds of the pomegranate fruit (Punica granatum), a fruit with a history of use spanning thousands of years across the Middle East, Persia, and South Asia. The oil is golden yellow to pale amber in colour with a distinctive nutty, fruity scent and a light to medium texture that absorbs gradually without leaving a heavy residue. Pomegranate Seed Oil is notable for containing punicic acid, a fatty acid found in very few other plant oils. At Maduras Herbals, we supply Pomegranate Seed Oil as a raw material for cosmetic manufacturers, DIY formulators, and skin care product developers looking for a distinctive, nourishing carrier oil from India.

About Pomegranate Seed Oil

Pomegranate seed oil is obtained from the seeds of the pomegranate fruit, a tree that originates from Iran and has since spread to the Mediterranean, Africa, Southeast Asia, Australia, and the Americas, including India where it is widely grown today across Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Gujarat. The oil is rich in anti-ageing compounds and is typically used at lower percentages to give skincare formulations a genuine performance boost rather than as a primary base oil.

What makes pomegranate seed oil stand out is its dominant fatty acid, punicic acid, a very rare omega-5 fatty acid that makes up around 66 to 79% of its total fatty acid composition. Punicic acid has a twisted carbon chain structure that gives the oil a thick, rich texture and may have beneficial anti-inflammatory effects according to available literature. The oil also contains polyphenols with remarkable antioxidant activity. In terms of skin benefits, pomegranate seed oil is associated with improved skin elasticity and collagen production, faster shedding of dead skin cells, stimulation of keratinocyte proliferation, and support for skin lipid barrier repair. Its antioxidants also help protect against stress from environmental exposure. It is particularly well suited to products for mature and dry skin, works well in the care of sensitive skin, and performs well in after-sun formulations. Even at small usage percentages it delivers a noticeable performance contribution.

Working with Pomegranate Seed Oil in Your Formulations

It works well in anhydrous products such as balms, masks, butters, and scrubs, and can also be used in emulsions and haircare products. It should only be added once the formulation has cooled below 40°C, and in emulsions it should go into the cool-down phase to protect its heat-sensitive fatty acids.

Quality & Formulation Notes

No adverse effects are documented, but pomegranate seed oil is a sensitive oil that requires careful handling in formulation. It should only be used once the formula temperature is below 40°C, and in emulsions it must be added during the cool-down phase. Its strong characteristic aroma is worth factoring into fragrance decisions early in development, and its very low oxidation stability means antioxidant protection and cool, dark storage are essential.

Applications

Skin Care Formulations: Facial serums, anti-ageing creams, body lotions, balms, massage oils

Hair Care Formulations: Hair oils, scalp serums, leave-in conditioning treatments

Cosmetic Formulation: Carrier base for essential oil and aromatherapy blends, lotion and cream oil-phase ingredient

General Use: Bulk supply for cosmetic manufacturers, DIY skin and hair care kits, salon and spa product formulations

Packing and Storage

Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat, ideally refrigerated to maintain freshness. Keep the container tightly sealed when not in active use. Due to its rich punicic acid content, Pomegranate Seed Oil is more prone to oxidation than many other carrier oils. Best before 9 months from packaging date. Natural variation in colour and scent between batches is characteristic of a cold pressed, unrefined oil.

Caution

Patch test is recommended before use on skin. In case of any allergic reaction, discontinue use and consult a dermatologist or physician.
